One of my biggest insecurities is… my eyes.
I know most people would say they dislike their arms, hair, teeth, etc. but I’ve always been so insecure about my eyes. They’re brown, on the smaller side and completely disappear when I smile.
In high school, I would pile on the eyeliner and mascara in an attempt to make them stand out more. So when I found out last extensions were like… a thing… I wanted them so so bad! However, the first thing people always say when you mention lash extensions is… “Wait don’t those ruin your eyelashes?” So of course I was hesitant to get them. But last December, I finally bit the bullet and got them done!
Now that I’ve had them for 3+ months, I wanted to do a little Q & A about my experience with lash extensions for anyone who has questions like I did!
Lash Extension Questions:
Where do you get them done?
I go to a freelance makeup artist named Maci Baudoin (@macibaudoinbeauty on Instagram). She came recommended by a few different girls I know, so that’s why I chose her. I really like her work so I just keep going to her, and have not tried anywhere else. So keep that in mind with my answers; I haven’t tried multiple places! So some people’s lash extension experience may vary. (P.S. This is not sponsored in any way; I pay full price for my lashes!)
How much do lash extensions typically cost?
This answer varies a lot based on the city you live in, what type of salon you’re going to, if you’re getting a full set vs a refill, etc. Most places I’ve seen in Baton Rouge charge $160-$240 for a full set. I don’t want to say what my girl charges because freelancers do have to up their prices as they get more in demand (so DM her for current pricing) but I will say that her prices are the lowest of anyone I’ve seen in town.
What is the benefit of having lash extensions?
So I REALLY really love having lash extensions. To me, the benefits are:
1) More defined eyes & thicker/longer lashes (obvi)
2) Majorly cuts down the time I spend on my morning makeup routine
3) I don’t have to deal with false lashes for every photo shoot or event anymore! Which is so nice because I struggle with applying those
How often do you have to get them refilled?
Most people recommend every 3-4 weeks, which is what I typically stick to. Note that a refill is cheaper than what you pay for the original full set.
How are they actually applied? Is it glue? Or do they like tie them in?
They are glued on to your natural lashes!
Do lash extensions ruin your real lashes?
I have not had my lash extensions taken off before, so I can’t speak on personal experience. I have seen extension removal videos on my lash girl’s Instagram, and their natural lashes still look great. BUT you do take that risk of damaging your natural lashes because you are putting glue on them. However, I do feel like the beauty industry is always evolving to create less-damaging glues, techniques, etc. When choosing who to get your lashes done by, ask if they have any lash removal videos to calm your nerves!
Can you still wear mascara?
I’m not sure if you are technically “allowed to” but I still do, haha. It hasn’t caused any issues for me. But I don’t take it off with regular eye makeup remover, which leads me to…
Do you have to clean them?
You don’t necessarily have to, but you definitely can! Just use baby shampoo and then brush out with a clean spooly.
Is it worth the time and money?
For me, absolutely. But not for everyone. If you already have good natural lashes, just rock some mascara and be on your way! But for me, it really helps my eyes pop and it cuts down the time I spend on getting dressed.
The only downside for me was that my eyes did not react well to the glue at first; it stung my eyes the first two times I got them done (but I liked having lashes so much I fought through it). Now my eyes are totally used to them and I don’t experience discomfort or irritation.
I have multiple friends who go to the same lash girl as me and they did not experience irritation at all. So it’s possible that your eyes might react badly to the glue, but not probable.
If there’s any questions I didn’t answer about lash extensions, feel free to comment below or DM me your question! I had a million questions before I got them too so I want to be helpful to anyone considering getting them 🙂
